AML Independent Audit FAQs
AML independent audits —your questions answered.
Independence and Scope
What does an independent AML audit review?
The review should reflect the firm's business and risk profile. Depending on the agreed scope, it may address program governance, written policies and procedures, risk assessment, customer onboarding, monitoring and escalation processes, training, recordkeeping, testing evidence and follow-up on prior findings. The engagement letter should clearly identify the areas included and any limitations.
Why does reviewer independence matter?
Independence helps make the review credible and useful. Before beginning work, the firm and reviewer should discuss the reviewer's role, any prior involvement with the program and any potential conflicts. The appropriate independence standard can vary by firm and regulatory context, so the engagement should document the scope and relationship clearly.
Can the same consultant design our AML program and conduct its independent audit?
That question should be considered carefully before the engagement begins. If the reviewer has designed, operated or made decisions about the program being assessed, it may affect the independence of the review. Discuss the prior work, the proposed audit scope and any applicable requirements so the firm can determine an appropriate arrangement.
Do you perform AML audits for broker-dealers?
American Elm provides AML independent audit support for financial-services firms, including broker-dealers, within an agreed scope. An initial discussion should cover the firm's business activities, customers, products, systems, supervisory structure and any special risk considerations so the work can be properly scoped.
Preparing for an Audit
What information should we have ready before an AML audit?
Common requests may include the AML program and recent updates, risk assessment, training records, supervisory and testing records, relevant procedures, sample reports or exception evidence, documentation of prior findings and remediation status. The exact list should be tailored to the engagement. Identify internal owners and use an agreed secure method to exchange confidential information.
How long does an AML independent audit take?
Timing depends on the firm's size, activities, available documentation, scope of testing, systems and the responsiveness of internal contacts. A focused engagement can often move efficiently when the requested information is organized, but the schedule should be set after the reviewer understands the scope. If you have a regulatory or board deadline, raise it at the outset.
Can an AML audit be performed remotely?
Many parts of an AML audit can be performed remotely through secure document exchange, interviews and review meetings. Whether remote work is appropriate depends on the scope, systems, records and any need for onsite review. The engagement should establish secure access, communication expectations and the method for handling confidential information before work begins.

Findings and Remediation
What should an AML audit report include?
The agreed report should describe the scope, period reviewed, methodology, observations or findings and recommendations. It should be clear enough for management to understand the basis for conclusions and determine next steps. The format and level of detail should be agreed at the outset and reflect the firm's needs and applicable requirements.
Can American Elm help us respond to AML audit findings?
Yes. Support may include helping management translate findings into a prioritized remediation plan, clarify responsible owners, update documentation, organize evidence of completion and prepare for follow-up. The engagement should distinguish between independent assessment, implementation support and management's responsibility for final decisions and execution.
What if we have already identified weaknesses in our AML program?
Bring the known issues, relevant deadlines, prior reports and remediation work to the initial discussion. The scope can then be designed around the areas that need attention, whether that is a focused review, independent testing, remediation support or preparation for an upcoming examination. Identifying issues early is generally more useful than waiting for a formal review or regulatory request.
Getting Started
How much does an independent AML audit cost?
Fees depend on the agreed scope, the firm's business and risk profile, the systems and records involved, the period to be reviewed, testing requirements, deadline and level of complexity. Comparing proposals is easier when each describes the scope, requested information, deliverables, timing and treatment of additional work. Contact American Elm to discuss your needs and obtain a proposed scope and fee.
